Words from the Artistic Director, HKCO

The past 25 years have been a period of continuous self-renewal, both for the people of Hong Kong and the Chinese music scene, which has made remarkable progress since the founding of the Hong Kong SAR.

1997 was a special year for me. On 1 June 1997, I became the Music Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and subsequently conducted at the British Farewell Ceremony on 30 June and the 97 Reunification Music Festival on 1 July, which was organised by the HKCO and featured a landmark joint performance between the HKCO and musicians from over 20 other Chinese ensembles. I will never forget that day – on the morning of the performance, a black rainstorm warning was issued, and we just had time to squeeze in a rehearsal after the warning was cancelled in the afternoon.

The Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Music Association (HKCIMA) was founded in 2005. In 2008, it teamed up with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to host the Hong Kong International Festival of Chinese Orchestras, which was attended by over 30 local Chinese orchestras as well as over 10 other ensembles including the China National Traditional Orchestra, the orchestras of the China Conservatory of Music and Xinghai Conservatory of Music, and ensembles from Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and Canada. In 2017, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the HKCIMA joined hands again to organise the Hong Kong International Youth Chinese Music Festival in collaboration with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Music Office. The festival was attended by the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra, numerous school orchestras from Mainland China, and over 20 local ensembles, primarily from local schools, and highlighted the growing popularity of traditional Chinese music among the younger generation. As the Honorary Chairman of the HKCIMA, I am deeply committed to promoting the development of the music industry and passing on the art of traditional Chinese music to the next generation.

The anniversary of the handover is a major event in Hong Kong’s calendar. Over the past years, the HKCO has organised and performed at a wide range of anniversary concerts, including a concert tour to Hangzhou, Vancouver and Toronto to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the handover, and a series of performances in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities during the 20th anniversary celebrations. This year marks the silver jubilee of Hong Kong’s handover, and the HKCO will be performing at our largest ever musical extravaganza with a record number of ensembles – a magnificent testament to the diverse nature of Hong Kong’s Chinese music scene. In addition to orchestral works, there will also be performances by zheng and dizi ensembles, as well as numerous works by contemporary Hong Kong composers.

Finally, I would like thank all the organisations and individuals that have supported us in the lead up to this event, including Fung Ying Seen Koon and the Hong Kong Culture and Art Foundation. Particular thanks go to all the participating Chinese music groups, without whom ‘Flying Dragons and Leaping Tigers’ would not have been possible. I hope that the concert will have a positive impact on society, encourage more people to learn the art of Chinese music, and reinforce Hong Kong’s status as a leading international centre of culture.
