Prof. Chan was the first Resident Composer of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and has written 10 symphonies plus over 200 musical works. Seven of his nine Symphonies were published on CD by Hugo Productions performed by orchestras in Hong Kong and Russia. He has received numerous awards including the First Prize in the International Double Reed Society Composition Contest, USA; the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Award from the Asian Composers League and several local awards. His works had been performed in over 30 countries. His biography is included in the New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians Online.
As a conductor, Prof. Chan is the Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society(established in 1956) since 1995 and has been leading this choir with regular concerts and occasional concert tours to perform oratorios and other sacred masterpieces. In 2017 he brought the choir and orchestra to perform his Symphony No.8 ‘This Boundless Land’ for organ, choir and orchestra in the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles with great success. In 2019 he brought the choir together with the Vancouver Oratorio Society to Toronto to premiere his Symphony No.9 ‘Universal Harmony. He had also conducted orchestras and ensembles in Japan, Korea, Macau and Mainland China. The Hong Kong Government appointed him Justice of the Peace in 2000. He was invited to become a Council member of the Chinese Musicians Association in 2009.
He received his BA in music from the Chinese University of Hong Kong studying composition with Professor David Gwilt. He went on to finish his Master and Doctor of Music degrees from the University of Toronto on a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship studying with Professor John Beckwith. Prof. Chan had been Professor of Music, Associate Dean of Arts, Chairman of the Music Dept. at CUHK. He had also served as Deputy Director of HKU SPACE. He is now Chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong, Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society, Chairman of the HK Association of Choral Societies, Treasurer of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Associate Dean of the CUHK(Shenzhen) School of Music and Adjunct Professor at CUHK. He also serves in numerous groups including the China Musicians Association, Hong Kong Dance Company and several others.
Clarence Chun Kit LING graduated from Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University. He is the National Committee Member of All-China Youth Federation, Committee Member of Zhongshan Committee, CPPCC, Committee Member of Hong Kong Election Committee, Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Youth Federation, Vice President of Relay China Youth Elite Association, Chairman of The Y.Elites Association, Chairman of The Outstanding Young Entrepreneurs Committee of The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Union, Director of The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Vice-chairmen of External Affairs Committee, Committee Member of Guangdong Federation of Industry and Commerce (General Chamber of Commerce), Executive Director and Deputy Secretary of Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Association, Vice-chairman of Hong Kong Shenzhen Youth Association, Honorary President of Federation of Hong Kong Zhong Shan Community Organisations, and Committee Member of Guangdong Youth Chamber of Commerce.
Clarence is the Co-Founder of Hong Kong's First Online Grocery Specialist, Ztore.com. He was honored as the winner of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2018 China awards. Apart from managing his family business, Kwai Hung Group, one of the largest private property development companies in Hong Kong, Clarence had helped advise different overseas businesses on their Asian expansion strategies in his personal capacity. One of the most significant transactions was to advise on Wanda Group’s £320m acquisition of Sunseeker Yacht International in 2013. Being an investor in more than 30 companies globally, including Shenzhen Parrot Media, Julien Wish You Good, Elephant Grounds, Tuhu, Pengyuan Credit Service, Hong Kong’s Lalamove, DayDayCook, Aurabeat Technology, US’s Twitter, Urban Legacies, UK’s Doctor Care Anywhere, Switzerland's Piech Automotive, etc. Recently, Clarence has started focusing his efforts on investing and helping companies expand to The Greater Bay Area. In 2021, he established the SUNWAH Global Youth Innovation Center in Nansha, Guangzhou, and serves as chairman.
