Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra

The Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra was founded in 1962 under the auspices of the Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association, with the mission to enhance the knowledge of Chinese music and level of music performance as well as the personal experience of valuable collaborative and mutual help endeavours among its members. Many of them have won prestigious awards in music competitions and have become music professionals.

The Orchestra takes part in various performing activities every year to demonstrate to the public the various possibilities of Chinese ensemble music while providing training and performing opportunities to local young musicians. It has been collaborating regularly with the government since 1996, and has organised over 50 concerts at town halls, theatres and civic centres.

The Orchestra also conducts music exchange frequently with other orchestras. Notable occasions include performing with Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra on its two tours to Melbourne, Australia, in August 2007 and August 2017 respectively; and appearing in the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival of Taiwan in 2015, where the Orchestra joined with the Gathering Music Workshop of Yilan County, Taiwan in the Xiangjuhuan concert.

Looking ahead, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will continue to provide more programmes of quality and diversity to the public, and add to the wonderful palette of Chinese music in Hong Kong.
