Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra

Founded in 1962, the Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra is a longstanding amateur Chinese orchestra with an active presence in the Hong Kong music scene. Its mission is to promote the art of traditional Chinese music. In the 1960s, the orchestra made a name for itself after winning numerous awards at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Over 300 musicians have performed for the ensemble since it was founded almost half a century ago.

Since 1981, the Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra has invited distinguished musicians from Mainland China to give joint performances and help Hong Kong artists to raise the profile of traditional Chinese music. Over the past decades, musicians such as the acclaimed dizi players Lu Chun-ling and Yu Xunfa, pipa players Tang Liangxing and Tang Liangzhou, erhu performers Gu Pengshou, Siu Pak-yung, Min Huifen and Zhu Changyao, the renowned guqin player Gong Yi, the conductors Xia Feiyun, Zhang Dasen and Ma Shenglong, and the composers Gu Guanren and Zhou Chenglong have performed at numerous concerts in Hong Kong, paving the way for successful collaboration between local amateur ensembles and professional musicians from the Mainland, and contributing to the growing popularity of traditional Chinese music in Hong Kong.

In 1992, 2002 and 2022, the Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra organised a major concert to celebrate its 30th, 40th and 50th anniversary. At each concert, the orchestra worked closely with acclaimed Chinese musicians to explore new performance formats and perform arrangements of famous Chinese works with varying styles and levels of difficulty. In recent years, the orchestra has received widespread acclaim for its innovative choice of formats and works at annual concerts: in 2014, the ‘Dance with Classical Symphonies’ concert with conductor Pang Kapang was a sell-out, showcasing numerous classic works as well as debuts of works by Hong Kong composers. The orchestra has also played a leading role in promoting cooperation with amateur ensembles in Mainland China – in September 2015, the orchestra held a concert in Hong Kong together with the Shanghai Fei-Yun Chinese Orchestra, followed by a repeat performance in Shanghai at the beginning of 2016. In July 2021, following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, it held a concert featuring an eclectic mix of traditional Chinese music and Cantonese opera.
