Yuen Siu-fai

Yuen is a senior performer of Cantonese opera. He first started working in the field of performing arts at the age of seven, as a child actor in films. Later he took to opera stage and more intensively studied Cantonese prosimetric storytelling Nanyin. He is one of the few operatic artists who can perform in multiple fields.

Yuen was awarded the Hong Kong Artist award in 1991, the BH Honorary Medal in 1992, and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Artistic Achievement Award in 2003. He is dedicated to Cantonese opera education and passing on its traditions to the next generation. He frequently lectures and holds artistic seminars at universities and middle schools, and in 2012 he was named an honorary scholar of the Education University of Hong Kong. In 2014 he received the HKSAR Bronze Bauhinia Star, and in 2016 received the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award for Outstanding Contributions to Art. He is also the author of several books about his life and experience in performing arts.

Yuen currently serves as Museum Expert Advisor (Cantonese Opera) for the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services department, Artistic Director of the One Table Two Chairs Foundation, and Associate Professor in the music department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
