Leung Hong-yu

Leung Hong-yu, Samuel is a fourth-year undergraduate student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has just ended a 1-year collaborative project called ‘A date with Dogs’ that creates interactive installations and music for dogs with public performances and garden tours organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department & Make A Different Institute. Last year, he was commissioned by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild to write a chamber piece featuring accordion for the 2022 Hong Kong Contemporary Music Festival: Global Delights. In 2020, Echoes of Spring was performed by NOVA Ensemble and conducted by Angus Lee in ‘New Generation 2020’ organised by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild. He also participated in the CUHK Ensemble-in-Residence call for scores. In 2022, Excursion won the David Gwilt Composition Prize and was conducted by Professor Koon Mee-yu Carmen. His string quartets have also been performed by the Cong quartet and Mivos quartet.


Apart from Western music, Leung also writes Chinese music. His original work Finding the Light was commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to arrange for a larger orchestration and premiered in the orchestra's season's opening concert 2021-22. For Contemporary Chinese Orchestral work, his music has been selected for ‘Music from the Heart’ for three consecutive years since 2020. He also took part in the ‘HKCO Net Festival – With New Tunes, We Connect’ in 2020.


Leung is now majoring in violin under the tutelage of James Cuddeford. Previously, he was a pupil of Goh Ching, Janson Lung, and Alan Kwong.
