Lawrence Tsui

Lawrence Tsui began learning the piano at the age of ten and drum set at 18. He won the Best Drummer award at YAMAHA’S Asian Beat open competition for bands in Hong Kong in 2000, when he was only 21. It was followed by a reprised winning of the same award the following year. After graduating from university, Tsui became a professional drummer and has since appeared in hundreds of pop shows and concerts. He has collaborated with numerous artists in live concerts and studio recordings. He was also the drummer of Mask Singer and Sons of Tomorrow, two highly popular music programmes in mainland China with viewership of over 100 million for each episode.

After joining the Hong Kong fusion band SIU2 in 2011, Tsui has contributed to three of the band’s record releases and also represented Hong Kong in music festivals in mainland China, the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Poland, Australia, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. In 2012, Tsui founded Gig Studio, a professional recording studio offering online drum music recording service, which was the first of its kind in China. It has made over 1000 recordings of pop songs sung in Chinese by various artists from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.  He also took part in making soundtrack music for movies, such as the promotional soundtrack for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and soundtrack music for Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, The Mermaid, From Vegas to Macau III, Call of Heroes, Operation Mekong, My Beloved Bodyguard, Chasing the Dragon, Wu Kong, etc. He has also produced records for various singers and bands as well as for songs.

Tsui founded the online drum music platform, GIG Channel, in 2020, and invited 50 drummers of renown in Hong Kong to perform and be interviewed, thus promoting and tracking the development of drum music in Hong Kong. The channel has more than 300,000 viewers.  In 2021, he was the adjudicator of the final round of ViuTV's reality show and drum competition, Battle of the Throne.

On the academic side, Tsui has been a guest lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Institute of Design for many years, teaching subjects on modern music style and culture, drumming techniques and sound recording studies.

He is currently the endorser for Zildjian Cymbals, Craftsman Drum Sticks and AAW Earphones in Hong Kong. Craftsman Drum Sticks has designed and issued signature sticks in Tsui’s name.
