Fu Zifei

Zheng virtuoso of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Fu joined the HKCO in 2022. Fu graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in the field of Chinese Instrumental Studies, specialising in the zheng, under the tutelage of Yin Qun, and minored in percussion under the instruction of Shen Guoqin. At the age of seven, she began learning the zheng under Hu Zishan and later went on to pursue advanced studies with instructors Hu Tongtong and Song Tingting, and received further tutoring from many instructors, including Zhou Wang, Ji Wei, Su Chang, Lin Ling, Wang Wei, Qi Yao, Deng Haiqiong, Jin Jian, koto (Japanese zheng) performer Kotani Keiko, and performer of traditional Teochew music Lin Zhong.

Fu has received the gold medal at the Hua Yue Cup International Guzheng Competition in Taiwan, and was the champion of the Guzheng division of the 2016 Singapore Chinese Music Competition. In 2018 she held a solo concert ‘Evening on Maple Bridge’ at the Dongguan Yulan Theater, which was featured on China Times Culture. In 2019 she was the sole recipient of the gold award at the NAFA-Rave Chinese Concerto Competition. In 2020, she was the sole recipient of the Singapore Nanyang Fine Arts Academy Merit Award for Chinese Music, and also premiered the zheng concerto Thus, performed with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra at the Singapore Chinese Music Competition.

From 2016 to 2020, Fu frequently traveled to perform and engage in exchanges in Dongguan, Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Shenyang, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and the US. Fu has composed two solo pieces for zheng, and two chamber music pieces for Chinese and Western instruments, and has published articles online about the cultural differences when studying abroad, as well as the science of zheng music performance.
