Wu Ga Shing

Principal Gaohu of the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, Wu joined the orchestra in 2020. A native of Hong Kong, he received the Jinyi Chinese Music Scholarship in 2023 and enrolled in a Bachelor in Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Wu currently majors in erhu under the tutelage of the head of the Academy’S Chinese music department and guest concertmaster for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Zhang Chongxue, and minors in banhu under the instruction of HKCO Co-Principal Huqin and Principal Zhonghu, Mao Qinghua. Inspired by instructor Ho Koon-wah to learn erhu, Wu began studying erhu, gaohu, and banhu at the age of eight under current HKCO Assistant Conductor and Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra Resident Conductor Rupert Woo Pak Tuen, and enrolled in youth music courses and The Hong Kong Academy for Arts in 2018, receiving several tuition waivers.


Wu has been awarded a variety of music scholarships and honors, including the 75th Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association Greenery Music Chinese Music Scholarship – Finals Third Place (banhu) in 2023; the 74th Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association champion in advanced banhu and recipient of the Sir Alexander Grantham Music Scholarship in 2022; the 73rd Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association champion in advanced gaohu in 2021; and second place in the 70th Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association in 2018. In 2022, Wu was awarded silver in the amateur A division of the Fifth Dunhuang Cup Chinese erhu competition.  


Wu actively participates in local music events. After joining the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, he performed as part of a Chinese music ensemble at the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Wu has also served as the concertmaster and Principal Gaohu of The Hong Kong Academy for the Arts youth music curriculum. In 2019 Wu joined the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra as an erhu player on a cultural exchange journey to Canada. As a middle school student, Wu served as the concertmaster of the school’s Chinese orchestra.
