Mao Qinghua

Mao Qinghua is currently Huqin Co-Principal and Zhonghu Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She began learning the erhu under Hang Xiaochun at the age of seven. In 1995, she won a Class One Award at the ‘Longguang Cup’ Instrumental Competition. She entered the middle school affiliated to the Nanjing University of the Arts where she received erhu training under the famous teacher, Ma Youde. In 2004, she passed the entrance examination and was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music to study Chinese Music under the famous erhu virtuoso and pedagogue, Professor Liu Changfu. With her outstanding entrance results, she was awarded many scholarships. 


Since joining the HKCO in 2008, Mao has performed the erhu solo of Reflection of the Moon on the Water, Spring Takes the Chill out of the River Water, Torrents of the River and Dream III: Fire-The Maiden Called “Rainbow Dress” etc., and impressed the audience with her virtuosity. Mao is also the zhonghu player of the Orchestra’s various huqin ensemble concerts to critical acclaim for her command of the diverse programmes for quartet and sestet.
