Ma Wai Him

Ma Wai Him is currently a virtuoso with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, serving as Suona Principal and guan player. He is also a part-time instructor in suona on the Junior Music Programme of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, a part-time player of the suona and guan at the Music Office of Hong Kong, and the founding member of the local band, The Majestic G.

Ma learned Chinese wind instruments from his father, Ma Wing-shing, at a young age. He completed his Master’s degree programme with double major in suona and guan at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2015. His teachers included Guo Yazhi, Law Hang Leung, Liu Hai, Xia Boyan and Lo Wai Leung. He also attended advanced courses in suona under Liu Ying and guan under Hu Zhihou.

He was the winner of the Silver Award-Folk Instruments section at the 16th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan in 2015 and the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards – Award for Young Artist (music) in 2017. In 2017, he was invited to be a Visiting Artist at the School of Music, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. 

Highlights of Ma’s solo performances in recent years include the solo recital presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in ‘Our Music Talents Series: Suona and Guan Concert by Ma Wai-him’ (2015). He also curated several of the HKCO concerts between 2015 and 2018, such as ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine’, ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine II’ and ‘In the Mood – Suona and Guan Ensemble Concert’, on which occasions he also performed as soloist and host to critical acclaim. Ma was winner of a concerto competition at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and performed A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix with the Academy Symphony Orchestra.

Ma has performed many crossover concerts with singer-songwriters of pop music, such as Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, Steve Wong Ka-keung, the Taiwan rock group Sticky Rice, Hong Kong jazz legend Eugene Pao and many more. In 2018, he was invited by ‘1563 at the east’ as Artist of the Month to perform in the Fusion Pop concert, ‘Music in the Orb – Ma Wai Him & Zenwester’.
