Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra

The Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra was founded on January 1, 2011 in Taiwan, with core members coming from the Hsinchu City Juvenile & Youth Chinese Orchestra founded more than two decades ago, as well as outstanding undergraduates from the music conservatories in Taiwan. Currently with an establishment of 85 members known for their high standard performing skills, considerable performance experiences, unique timbre and exceptional teamwork, the Orchestra has won the accolade as “the most dynamic, virtuosic Chinese orchestra” in Taiwan.


Soon after its inauguration, guided by its Artistic Director Liu Chiang-Pin, the Orchestra organized the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival in 2011. It was followed by subsequent editions in 2012 - 2015 and 2017. Major Chinese orchestral ensembles converged in Hsinchu for musical exchange and performance showcases. Famous conductors including Huang Xiaotong, Qu Chunquan, Chen Tscheng-Hsiung, Hu Bingxu, Zhang Lie, Wang Fujian, Yan Huichang, Liu Sha and Pang Kapang as well as solo virtuosi contributed to the many highly successful, sold-out concerts.


Recently in 2016, it held several concerts at the Beijing Concert Hall and the Tianjin Concert Hall, and was invited to participate in the 11th China Arts Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. In 2017, the Orchestra gave concerts in Baotou, Inner Mongolia and Taiyuan, Shanxi, which were all sold out and won rave reviews.


Liu Chiang-Pin Conductor


Liu Chiang-Pin was born and raised in Hsinchu city, Taiwan, and graduated from the Chinese Culture University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Suona Performance. Between 1997 and 2006, as a suona player with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, he premiered several suona concertos by famous Taiwanese composers and toured more than thirty countries across Europe, America, Asia and Africa. He is currently the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Hsinchu City Juvenile & Youth Chinese Orchestra. He has led the two ensembles on performing tours in Japan and mainland China and won wide acclaim.


Liu was coached in conducting by Huang Xiaotong, a leading light in China’s conducting circle. In 2010, he was presented an outstanding conductor award by the Mayor of Hsinchu City, and was named one of the Top 100 Artists in Hsinchu. Two years later, he was recognized for his outstanding contribution to arts education in Taiwan. In 2016, he received a Chinese Literary Award for Music from the Chinese Writer's & Artist's Association. In recent years, he has organized many international arts events, and is the curator of the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival between 2011 and 2015 as well as in 2017.


Liu has also been an active figure among professional ensembles in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, having guest-conducted the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Shanxi Song & Dance Theatre National Orchestra, Guangdong National Orchestra, National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan, Chongqing Chinese Orchestra, Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra, Henan National Music Orchestra, China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, China National Traditional Orchestra, Tianjin Chinese Orchestra, Zhejiang Chinese Orchestra, Jilin Chinese Orchestra, Baotou Chinese Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
