Chan Yi Nik

Pipa player of the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, Chan joined the orchestra in 2021. He currently majors in pipa at The Hong Kong Academy for the Arts under the tutelage of instructor Zhang Ying, after feeling inspired by instructor Chan Wan-in during middle school. He has performed in the ‘Preservation and Perpetuation of the Classics’ concert and has played the sextet piece 2AM at the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Council Awards Ceremony. He is also currently a member of the Yue Pipa Ensemble, and plays for the Chinese orchestra of Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.


Chan has competed and earned awards both locally and internationally, including championships in the intermediate and advanced divisions for pipa performance at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, and was awarded the Greenery Music Chinese Music Scholarship in the N588 division for the two pieces Rock Pipa – FIGHT! and The Adventures of Zhao. Chan was also awarded silver in advanced pipa and the Nanyang International Music Competition, received the Sir Alexander Grantham Music Scholarship of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, and once performed the classic pipa piece King Chu Doffs His Armour for the RTHK Channel 4 program Student Concert Hall. Chan is determined to promote Chinese music in Hong Kong and around the world, giving more people the opportunity to experience its unique appeal.
