Gu Guanren is a National Class One Composer with a highly acclaimed oeuvre in Chinese instrumental music. He was the former Company Director and Artistic Director of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, and is highly respected for his contribution to the genre. His works are characterized by a combination of the strong ethnic touch and modernity. With close to twenty years of writing for the sizhu genre ('silk and bamboo', or lyrical 'string and wind'), he has been a much sought after conductor in the international Chinese music circles. The HKCO has invited Gu to be the artistic adviser for this concert. He will be leading the HKCO Folk Music Ensemble to perform several of his most well-known works, which he has categorized under the title A New Repertoire of Jiangnan Sizhu, which include Strolling along the Su Embankment, Green Fields, Morning in Spring etc. It paints scene after scene of the idyllic water-logged region of south of the Yangtze through his engaging lyricism.
