Sun Yongzhi and Choo Boon-chong - The Lilting Sounds of the Dizi and Xiao
The Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival in 2005, presented by the HKCO, was highly successful, with keen participation from the community in the theme-related activities and concerts. Now you can hear the crystalline notes of the Chinese flutes again in a concert series featuring Sun Yongzhi and Choo Boon-chong, two dizi and xiao virtuosi of the Orchestra. The popular programme promises to touch your heartstrings.

Sun Yongzhi

Sun Yongzhi was trained by the dizi maestros Yuan Xiuhe and Zhao Songting and is currently Section Leader (Wind) and Dizi Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Before joining the HKCO in 1997, he was Head of the Centre of Wind Music Teaching and Research of the Xi¡¦an Conservatory of Music in. Apart from teaching, he was also an active performer, having played many film and television scores and cut many recordings. He was also a winner of many prizes in competitions, and has performed in more than twenty countries and regions around the world.

Sun is currently a member of the Chinese Musicians¡¦ Association (Shaanxi Chapter) and the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, Visiting Professor and supervisor on the postgraduate programme of the Xi¡¦an Conservatory of Music, and Instructor and supervisor of postgraduate studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Choo Boon-chong

Choo Boon-chong was born in Singapore and joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 1979, where he is currently Assistant Dizi Principal. He is also the chairman of Hong Kong Bamboo Flute Society and a member of the Chinese Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. He has been an adjudicator for the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival for many years. Choo¡¦s forte is in the bangdi, demonstrating excellent fingering and breathing techniques and ease in the upper register.

As a member of the HKCO, Choo has performed with the Orchestra in many parts of the world. He is often invited to perform as a guest soloist for other orchestral groups. In 2003, on behalf of the HKCO, he was invited to participate in the soundtrack recording of Columbia Pictures' Warriors of Heaven and Earth in India.
