Chew Hee-chiat
Conductor
  • Chew Hee-chiat is currently the Associate Conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Chew received higher education in the United States and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a double bachelor¡¦s degree in cello performance and computer science in 1994. Subsequently, he obtained his Master of Music in orchestral conducting from the University of South Carolina in 1996. Before joining the HKCO, Chew has been the Music Director of Professional Cultural Center Orchestra (PCCO) of Malaysia since 1996.

  • In 2004, Chew guest conducted the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in a highly successful concert, A Nanyang Musical Voyage II. In 2005, he conducted the Opening Rally of the Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival organised by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 2005. More than 500 players performed his work A Celebration of Dizi under his baton. The event made the Guinness Book of Records as having the largest number of people playing the dizi at the same time.

  • Chew's compositions are greatly influenced by his Southeast Asian cultural heritage. This style has reflected on his original works, which include Orchestra Suite No.2, The Third, Fantasy Dance, dizi and small orchestra ¡V Tradition?.

VIA NOVA Percussion Group (Austria)
  • The percussion ensemble, with its international membership and which was founded in Salzburg. The Percussion Group was able to convince the audiences and critics of great festivals such as the Festival Echternach, the Salzburg Festival, the Carithische Sommer, the Chamber Music Weeks of Sofia, the Finca Festival Gran Canaria, the Musicastello (Italy), the Taipei International Percussion Convention.

  • This sound group mixes a large repository of ideas with a sense of authentic music-making. It was honored in 2005 at the International Percussion Competition Luxembourg, where Via Nova obtained the First Prize as well as two other awards. The greatest recognition, however, is awarded the quartet by the audience: "The audience went wild. Three standing ovations provided encores, one more exciting than the last. A superlative evening of percussion! We hope to hear you again soon, musicians of the Via Nova Percussion Group!"

  • The Via Nova is: Georgi Varbanov, Alexander Kamenarov, Rupert Struber and Johannes Eder.
