Chew Hee-chiat

Chew Hee-chiat is currently the Associate Conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Chew received higher education in the United States and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a double bachelor¡¦s degree in cello performance and computer science in 1994. Subsequently, he obtained his Master of Music in orchestral conducting from the University of South Carolina in 1996. Before joining the HKCO, Chew has been the Music Director of Professional Cultural Center Orchestra (PCCO) of Malaysia since 1996.

In 2004, Chew guest conducted the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in a highly successful concert, A Nanyang Musical Voyage II. In 2005, he conducted the Opening Rally of the Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival organised by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 2005. More than 500 players performed his work A Celebration of Dizi under his baton. The event made the Guinness Book of Records as having the largest number of people playing the dizi at the same time.

Chew's compositions are greatly influenced by his Southeast Asian cultural heritage. This style has reflected on his original works, which include Orchestra Suite No.2, The Third, Fantasy Dance, dizi and small orchestra ¡V Tradition?.

VIA NOVA Percussion Group (Austria)

The percussion ensemble, with its international membership and which was founded in Salzburg. The Percussion Group was able to convince the audiences and critics of great festivals such as the Festival Echternach, the Salzburg Festival, the Carithische Sommer, the Chamber Music Weeks of Sofia, the Finca Festival Gran Canaria, the Musicastello (Italy), the Taipei International Percussion Convention.

This sound group mixes a large repository of ideas with a sense of authentic music-making. It was honored in 2005 at the International Percussion Competition Luxembourg, where Via Nova obtained the First Prize as well as two other awards. The greatest recognition, however, is awarded the quartet by the audience: "The audience went wild. Three standing ovations provided encores, one more exciting than the last. A superlative evening of percussion! We hope to hear you again soon, musicians of the Via Nova Percussion Group!"

Lung Heung-wing

Lung Heung-wing earned his doctorate from West Virginia University, USA. Lung was the Principal Percussionist at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for 19 years. As a renowned percussionist, he has given performances in five continents. He won the Outstanding Young Person Award presented by Hong Kong Commercial Radio and was selected as the Instrumentalist of the Year and one of the Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons by the Hong Kong Junior Chamber.

In 2002 and 2007, Lung made musical arrangements and led a congregation of over 10,000 performers playing percussion music in celebration of the 5th and 10th anniversaries of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The performances set two new records in the Guinness Book of Records.

Lung is the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Percussion Centre, the first percussion school in Hong Kong. The drumming group of the Centre also gave many performances in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

Chau Chin-tung

Chau Chin-tung currently is the Acting Principal Percussion of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta Ltd.. He was graduates of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts trained in Chinese percussion under Yim Hok-man, Deputy Concertmaster cum Percussion Principle of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

He has often been invited to various types of cultural performances in Hong Kong. In 1999, He was commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival to compose a new work, Boombastic Verses, in a performance in which they played the percussion and danced. Chau has often been invited to attend international cultural activities, including performances at the arts festivals in London, France, Netherlands, Berlins, Canada, the USA and Japan. He was also a guest performer at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

Apart from giving performances of a wide variety, Chau is also dedicated to the promotion of music education in Hong Kong. He is an Artist-in-Residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Hong Kong with Four Gig Heads. He has been an Artist-in-Residence of RTHK from 2003.
