Cao Ding
Guest Conductor
  • Cao Ding is currently Principal Conductor of the Shanghai Opera, Resident Conductor of the Chorus of the China National Symphony Orchestra, a National Class One Conductor in China and a professor of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Allegro Singers of Hong Kong.

  • Cao graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1985 cum laude in Conducting. He was appointed conductor by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra in 1986, and Shanghai Orchestra in 1988. He is recognised for his wide ranging repertoire, varied styles, exuberance, stringent attention to detail and the ability to touch the heart of his audience. He was invited to give concerts around the world and received critical acclaim. The famous musician Lu Qi described him as "one of the top conductors of young to middle-aged category in China".

  • Cao was presented with the title of "Outstanding Expert of the Ministry of Culture" by the Ministry of Culture of China in 1992, and became an honoured recipient of the ¡§Government Special Allowance¡¨ in 1993. He was also the recipient of the Baogang Award for Beaux Arts in 1995.

Luo Jing
Zheng
  • Luo Jing started to play zheng at ten. She entered the Department of Folk Music of the Conservatory proper in 1992, graduating with distinction in 1995, one year ahead of the full term. She joined the Shanghai National Music Orchestra in the same year as zheng soloist. She has been a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra since 2002. In 2003, she started teaching in the Music Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and HKAPA.

  • Trained by virtuosi throughout her studies and being gifted and diligent, Luo has a solid groundwork in zheng performance. By incorporating the different styles of the traditional zheng schools, she is able to come into her own. Graceful but not feminine, brilliant but not glamorous, understated but not insubstantial, and ethereal but not sapless, hers is a tranquil, relaxed and refreshing artistic style.
