Another
musical spectacular by the three performing companies in Hong Kong
This
is a musical version of the play by He Jiping, We Are One Family, which
had a highly successful 20-show run during the 2001 Hong Kong Arts Festival. He,
of The No. 1 Restaurant in China, De Ling and the Empress Dowager Ci
Xi and The Red Boat fame, wrote the play for the Hong Kong Repertory
Theatre, and the audience's favourable reception was obvious. As the fully packed
house watched, they smiled, nodded knowingly and laughed over the battle for survival
between a traditional Chinese noodle shop and its new pizzeria neighbour. It is
a head-on clash between what is old and what is new. From conflicts to compromise,
and from rivalry to what seems like love between the young man of the noodle shop
and the young woman of the pizza shop, a local audience may well find shadows
of themselves in the dramatic story - it reflects the "never-say-die"
spirit of Hong Kong which keeps us afloat even in the face of the most devastating
adversities. It also confirms once again our belief that we are always on the
right track to keep fate in our own hands.
