Hearty notes from Hong Kong and China

Led by Wong On-yuen, the Folk Music Ensemble of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will perform traditional folk pieces in Chinese music.

By tradition, the Music from the Heart series is an occasion on which musicians of the HKCO can display the less known aspects of their talents, and a platform for presentation of all types of original compositions by local composers. The 2004 series sees an extension of the platform to the Mainland as students and their teachers from China's music institutes and conservatories are invited to present their new, original works in Chinese music. It is hoped that by cultivating this channel of exchange, the Chinese music scene in Hong Kong would be enlivened and more compositions would appear.

In the first half of the programme, the HKCO will perform Nan Guan, a new work by the Filipino composer, Jose Maceda, another new work by Hong Kong born composer Lee Pui-ming who is now residing in Toronto, and other original compositions by Hong Kong composers.

The second half of the programme features original compositions by the undergraduates and professors of the Central Conservatory of Music, with soloists and ensembles coming also from the Conservatory.

Wong On-yuen / Conductor

  • The Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor of HKCO. From 1981, Wong has produced twenty-six albums as soloist and has held more than a hundred huqin recitals at home and abroad.

  • The New York Times "The variety of colour he produced was enough to make a listener momentarily regards the four strings of the violin as needless luxury".

  • The awards he has received include "Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons 1985", "Performer of the Year 1989" awarded by the Hong Kong Artists' Guild, "The Most Outstanding Asian Artist Award" by the Chinese-American Arts Council of New York (1991)," Outstanding Gentlemen of the 1990's" by the RED company of the United States(1992) and the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE)(1997).

Wang Fujian / Conductor

  • Famous conductor. Wang is considered one of the most active conductors on the Chinese music scene in recent year. He has been the key instructor in Chinese music orchestral studies of The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Currently, he is the Associate Professor of the Conservatory and Deputy Head of the Department of Folk Music.

  • With years of experience in his art form and in teaching, Wang is recognized for his views on the establishment and development of Chinese folk orchestras.

Chew Hee-chiat / Conductor

  • Currently the Assistant Conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO). Chew has been the Music Director of Professional Cultural Center Orchestra (PCCO) of Malaysia since 1996.

  • His works include Orchestra Suite No1, Orchestra Suite No2, The Third, and Fantasy Dance.
