Min Huifen & HKCO
A World of Chinese Theatre in Her Huqin


    ˇ§Min Huifen & HKCOˇ¨ concert will be held on 9 & 10 March, at 8:00pm, at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

    On this visit to Hong Kong, Min will be performing with the HKCO in a programme that features arias from Chinese theatre handpicked by Min herself. And she will be demonstrating the ˇ§Use of Chinese Operatic Singing Style in the Performance of Instrumental Musicˇ¨ through The Embroidered Purse (an aria from a Hu Opera of the same name), Wandering in the Garden (an aria from the Kunju, The Peony Pavilion), Fish Hawks Dabbling in Water (Chaozhou music), Wang Zhaojun Going Beyond the Great Wall (Cantonese Operatic Aria), Capriccio on Theme from Hong Lake (the theme song in the opera, Red Guards on the Hong Lake) and Homecoming.

    Moreover, Zhao Jianhua, the Student of Min Huifen, will also perform In the Deep of the Night. World premiere of Tai O on My Mind by Kwok Hangkei, the 4th piece of Cadenzas of Hong Kong, will be another highlight of the concert.

Artists Biography

Yan Huichang    Conductor
National Class One Conductor. As a conductor who has worked with all professional Chinese orchestras in Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, Yan has won the acclaim of the music circles in China and abroad for his artistic and conducting talents. Under his baton, and in collaboration with the famous composer Zhao Jiping, the Symphony Orchestra section of the China National Symphony Orchestra made the soundtrack recordings for such award-winning films as Raise the Red Lantern, Ballad of the Yellow River, and Five Girls and a Rope. Yan was awarded the ˇ§Cultural Medallion (Music)ˇ¨ by the National Arts Council of Singapore in September 2001. Since 2004, he has been a Visiting Professor in many music conservatories. Yan was awarded a Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Chief Executive of HKSAR in 2004 in recognition of his remarkable achievements in Chinese music as well as his efforts in promoting Chinese music.

Min Huifen    Erhu
Famous erhu soloist, was born in Yixing, Jiangsu. She started learning the erhu from her father Min Jiqian at the age of eight. In 1969, she graduated from Folk Music Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Currently, she is ranked a National Class One Performer in China and rewarded numerous awards. Min has a performing style that is latent with passions and touching but not affected. She takes poetic license without losing her control, and there is a listfulness about her that is untouched by pathos. Feeling, gusto and mood are expressed as one impressive whole. Min gave performances in various places in Europe, America and Asia and won critical acclaims: "an erhu performer with extraordinary talent" (Eugene Ormandy, Music Director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, 1973), "even her rests were filled with music" (French newspaperˇ¦s critics), "she had told the whole story of human sufferings in heartrending notes that came from her bow" (Japanese Conductor Seiji Qzawa).

Zhao Jianhua    Erhu
He was born in Shanghai, China and was taught the erhu by his uncle, Li Liang ˇV a famous erhu performer and educator. He was admitted to the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra in 1978 and studied under erhu virtuoso Min Huifen. Over the years, he has won numerous awards in various music competitions including the Performing Award at The Shanghai Festival of Spring in 1986 and the Third Prize of the Professional Erhu Section at the Beijing ART Trophy Music Competition in 1989. Zhao had also performed in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. He is currently the erhu principal of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
