Message from the Artistic Director

With its elegant notes and ethereal mysticism, the zheng has inspired many scholars and poets down the ages. The captivating charm of zheng music is excellently described in these two lines, "All the guests at the banquet were spellbound, as the zheng played out the woeful cries of the wild geese in flight.."
Life in the 21st Century has brought many of us to realize that in a material-rich society, one of the ways to refresh our soul and attain transcendental peace is to listen to music. Following the success of The Huqin Festival of Hong Kong (2001), the Hong Kong Drum Festival (2003-2005) and the Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival (2005), with the support of local zheng groups, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is therefore organizing the Hong Kong Zheng Festival. There will be concerts and a host of community-wide activities for everyone to enjoy. Such activities includes exhibition, zheng-making workshops and outreach performances by various zheng music groups in Hong Kong
You are cordially invited to join us in a celebration of one of our finest cultural assets, the music of ancient China!

Yan Huichang
Artistic Director / Principal Conductor
