HKCO presents "Majestic Drums V - The Dynamic World of Yim Hok-man"

From September 23-24, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) is holding the Opening Concert for the 29th Orchestral Season, Majestic Drums V - The Dynamic World of Yim Hok-man at 8pm, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The theme of this concert series is on drums ¡V both Chinese and Western. A brainchild of Yim Hok-man, the famous virtuoso of Chinese drums, it has finally come to fruition after years of planning and coordinating. The opening piece is a grand fanfare, Drums East, Drums West, featuring percussive instruments of Chinese and western music and performed by Yim himself and his students. It will be followed by Camel Bells of Xinjiang with its exotic sounds, performed by an eighteen-piece ensemble, and two regional pieces, the lyrical Bai-Hua-Yuan, of the Sunan Shifangu, and the rousingly celebrative The Fishermen's Triumphant Song, of the Zhoushan Gong and Drum music.

After the intermission, Yim will be joined by Lung Heung-wing, another 'King of Drums' in Hong Kong but better known in the western genre. The two master drummers will perform with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra the magnificent percussion concerto by Kuan Nai-chung, The Age of the Dragon. As they sail through the cosmos with their majestic sounds, they will bring us The Sun, The Moon and The Stars before we come back to The Earth. Are you ready for your cosmic tour? Get set, and let's go!

Mr Yim Hok-man said, "The Drums East, Drums West is the east-west hybrid colours of Hong Kong are what make the city of Hong Kong unique, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as a Cultural Ambassador of Hong Kong unique, and myself as a drummer unique. In this concert, we shall be bringing you some of the best known drum pieces, including Flying Dragon and Leaping Tigers, The Ox Fighting the Tiger, The Drum Poem and In the Deep of the Night. They will be strung together by the power of the rhythmic patterns. With this, we would like to say welcome and thank you for coming!"
