Among the many types of wind instruments in China, the dizi and the xiao distinguish themselves with their poignant tone colours. The dizi is of a simpler construction; it can express rich nuances of emotions in fluid and florid tones, and can be so penetrating in sound that it is described as 'being able to break rocks and penetrate the clouds'. The xiao, on the other hand, is more subtle, to the point of being introspective; it has warmer, more natural tones, and is noted for its lyrical qualities. With the hectic lifestyle we lead in Hong Kong, we need music like this to purge our mind and soul. Following the success of the Hong Kong Huqin Festival in 2001 and the Hong Kong Drum Festival in 2003, the latter of which was a feat to revive Hong Kong after the SARS outbreak, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra hopes to bring to the community The Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival as a sanctuary of beauty and peace, a source of new energy and inspiration, and a soulful retreat.
The Hong Kong Dizi and Xiao Festival is organized by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, co-presented by the Hong Kong Bamboo Flute Society, in conjunction with the City University of Hong Kong, The Avenue of Stars, various music groups in Hong Kong and Mandarin Travel (International) Co Ltd, and with the generous support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The festival programme will include a 'Dizi Marathon' exhibitions, talks, demonstrations and two concerts, Xiao - the Instrument that Tells of Journeys in Life and Chinese Flute Virtuosi In Concert. We hope that it will be a musical expedition that can enhance your interest in and give you more in-depth knowledge of the two instruments. I look forward to taking this musical expedition with all members of the community of Hong Kong. It will be a challenging self-discovery tour. So come join us! Yan Huichang Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra
