Zhang Ying

Zhang Ying is a pipa virtuoso who holds a Master’s degree from the China Conservatory. She was trained under Zhao Yinan, Li Guixiang, Wu Junsheng, Ren Hong and Yang Jing. She is a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and at the same time on the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University.

Zhang was the winner of the Silver Award for Pipa Specialism, Youth Section, at the 1st Chinese Instrumental Music Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture in 2002; and the First Prize in the Youth Section at the 3rd “Longyin Cup” International Ethnic Instrument of China (Pipa) in 2004.

She gave a pipa recital in 1999. In June 2008, she held a highly successful graduation concert in Beijing leading to her award of a Master’s degree in pipa as well as the release of a DVD which records the concert. In October 2009, she gave her first solo recital in Hong Kong, Zhang Ying – Favourites in Pipa Music, which was followed by another solo recital in Chung Shan Hall in Taipei the following June. In August 2008, she launched her first solo album for pipa, Dancing in the Wind. A critic in the newspaper wrote, “(Zhang) showed a solid groundwork, performing with a confidence-inspiring steady hand that is, at the same time, not bereft of insight into the emotive side of the music. Marvelous control is contrasted with appropriate passions. An outstanding performance.” Over the years, Zhang has performed in the United States, the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, South Korea, Norway, Germany and Czech Republic.
