The origins of Chinese musical instruments are in fact closely related in many ways to folk instruments all over the world. Such connections have become particularly obvious and are subject to innovations and changes in a world dominated by the Internet and the idea that the world is a global village. This concert series offers carnivals of wind music in the global village, where the bagpipe from Ireland, the saxophone which fascinates millions around the world in jazz, the lusheng of a minority tribe in China and the 36-reed soprano sheng, a hi-tech product, join forces with traditional Chinese wind instruments such as the guanzi, the suona, the dizi and the sheng. They all have their distinct colours to show. They also convince us that Chinese music is not antiquated and the world at large is not remote. ----------------------------------------- 3-4.1.2003 (Fri & Sat) 8:00 pm Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall $150, 130, 110, 90 -----------------------------------------
