Golden Chinese Classics of the Century — Parade I

The conductor in this concert series will be Yu Feng, currently Head of the Department of Conducting of the Central Conservatory of Music in China and Music Director of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. The programme includes Liu Xing's zhongruan concerto No. 1 In Remembrance of Yunnan, a colourful and imaginative piece which will be performed by Zhang Xinhua and the HKCO. Zhang was the first soloist to premiere the work in 1987, and is currently a Liuqin Principal of the Central Folk Orchestra in Beijing. Another work worth mentioning is Erhu Rhapsody No. 1, a technically florid piece by Wang Jianmin, which is making its debut here in Hong Kong and features Li Baoshun, a Principal from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, as soloist.
Programme for the first concert includes the ever-popular As the Moon Rises (arranged by Peng Xiuwen) and Northwest Suite No. 1 by Tan Dun, a piece that brings home to you the loess plateau, or the “Yellow Earth”, of China. The second concert features two Hong Kong compositions: the internationally acclaimed Insect World by Doming Lam, and the twice-winning composition as “The Most Performed Serious Music of Hong Kong” by Kuan Nai-chung, Journey to Lhasa, which has twice been made into a CD for popular release.
“Golden Chinese Classics of the Century — Parade I” is part of the “Polling for the Most Popular Chinese Works of the 20th Century”, which also includes the two concert series “Golden Chinese Classics of the Century — Parade II” and “Golden Chinese Classics of the Century — Winning Selection in Concert” .
