The Music World Press Release

The Hong Kong Dulcimer Festival-
Discovery: Dulcimers around the World

An Exotic 'feast' that brings to you the dulcimer sounds of different parts of the world.

Artistic Director

If you are a regular at Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra's concerts, you would not be a stranger to the yangqin, or Chinese dulcimer. It is always placed right in the middle of the orchestra, and the player would hold a pair of small hammers made of bamboo to hit the strings to make the notes. It is an instrument that produces a variety of sounds, from the demure and lyrical to the lively and spirited, always changing in tempo and temperament. It has found its roots in the Chinese musical tradition, and is an important accompanying instrument for narrative singing and Chinese opera for many centuries. The modern version of the yangqin has a wide range, is chromatic, can be easily tuned. Some even has a damper installed. Suitable for orchestral or solo performances, it is an important component in Chinese traditional instruments.

At the same time, the yangqin is distinguished by its universality. The dulcimer can be found on all the continents, played in a variety of styles. Prof. Li Xi'an, the famous music theorist, has once said, "This is one instrument that can be found in every corner of the Earth, wherever Man has set foot. It comes in slightly different forms, and spins off music that is so diverse that it is equally at home with the roving gypsies and with John Cage."

The yangqin stands unique among Chinese instruments for embracing both universality and distinct ethnicity. As a cultural ambassador of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is armed with the mission to share the dulcimer - which belongs both to China and the world - with the people of Hong Kong. In the Hong Kong Dulcimer Festival 2008, we shall be showing the many facets of dulcimer music through a variety of activities, which include a dulcimer workshop, a masterclass, a lunch time concert and an exhibition. They aim to give an omni-directional presentation of the history, culture, performing practices and the stylistic features of dulcimers in the world, so that the citizens of Hong Kong will be able to have an upfront experience of the dulcimer family.

The highlight of the Hong Kong Dulcimer Festival 2008 is the concert, "Discovery: Dulcimers around the World". We are honoured to have dulcimer virtuosi from different countries participating on this occasion. The President and Vice President of the China Yangqin Society, Huang He and Li Lingling, will be leading a team of young players from the Mainland to perform famous works of the international repertoire on the Chinese dulcimer, the yangqin. Johannes Fuchs of Switzerland will transport the audience to the picturesque Alps with the refreshing notes of his European dulcimer, the Hackbrett. Viktoria Herencsar, President of the Cimbalom World Association, will share the stage with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra by playing the Hungarian dulcimer, the Cimbalom, in a cross-cultural musical dialogue. HKCOˇ¦s Li Tak-Kong and Yu Mei-lai, in true spirit of the Orchestra which emphasizes that 'music is to be shared', will be leading dozens of their students in an impressive performance. The concert is an exotic 'feast' that brings to you the dulcimer sounds of different parts of the world.

So tonight, let us take the dulcimer as the vehicle on the worldˇ¦s music highway, and begin a journey that spans Europe and Asia.
